'A cage goes in search of a bird'
There was a cage, all black and empty, that sat under the stairs, untill it was dark When all of the people, were asleep in their beds, the cage would get up, on invisible legs It would go in search of birds, not to trap and ensnare, but for want of company, underneath the stairs Travelled at night, through the rain and the cold, across highways and forests, or so it was told Perching in trees, for what hours it could, for as long as it took, as long as it would Waiting in patience, throughout the night, silent and sure, untill there was light And with no catch, before the sun came, it would come off the tree, and feel somewhat in pain But sometimes perchance, a bird would fly by, and for all of its wonder, the cage would stand by Untill one night, when the cage had wandered, further into the forest, and quietly pondered Of what birds were like, and if they would share, his small cozy room, underneath the stair A small red martlet, came twitering in, be-dappled with spots, and a curious grin The cage took its time, and closed its door slowly, the martlet still humming, and hovering lowly Then back to the house, where the cage took its prize, it enjoyed its companion, it enjoyed the birds cries For as long as the bird, was trapped in the cage, it starved for food, as it began to age Yet the cage couldn't feed her, the cage wouldn't dare, take his new treasure, from under the stair She would fly away, if it opened the door, the cage would be lonely, and silent once more But as much as it wanted, as long as it tried, time had passed without mercy, and the bird had died So the cage took to thought, with what wisdom it could, and when the night had come, went back to the wood To find a new bird, just as simple and fair, to come live within, underneath the stair
